Moon Kansas City
One of my best friends, Katy Ryan, is now a published author. She’s written the Kansas City guide for the Moon travel series. The book isn’t just for travelers though. It’s for people new to the city, or for anyone wanting to get to know the city better — even if they’ve lived here forever! While Katy was writing the book, she often asked me if I had heard of a place, or turned me on to something I didn’t know about. There’s just THAT MUCH going on in the KC metro area.
Not to brag, but Katy is a juggernaut of talent and I am honored to know her. She wrote this book while she had a full time job as a magazine editor and additional freelance responsibilities. I am really not sure how she managed it all!
The Moon Kansas City guide is available at major retailers, and at local Rainy Day Books. Please support Katy and Kansas City businesses and get a copy for yourself or someone who would love to visit KC!

I really wish I could think of something clever to do for April Fools, but seeing how I hate surprises, it’s not in my nature.
So…let’s talk some grabs ‘n stabs!

ModCloth sent out an email for their swim collection, and it’s all Noir-Glamour. It’s making me think old-Hollywood thoughts.
Even more swimwear, this time from the luxurious Agent Provocateur. I love the Risa style, the details give the suit a denim-like feel.
I however do not need bathing suits this year, as I have a Penguin bikini that I got 2 years ago and have worn maybe 3 times, and I have an Ester Williams halter one-piece in leopard print that I wore ONCE last year. Just ridiculous. I need to at least go to the community center indoor pool more, because at least there I don’t have to douse myself in SPF 80, which is a big reason I find going to the pool so laborious. I love swimming but hate the sun. It’s complicated.
Ordering vintage cat-eye glasses online! I’m so excited to get them, I will post pictures once they arrive!
The NPR iPhone app. I know this is lame, because turning on the radio isn’t difficult, but man, I love that while I am getting ready in the morning I can listen to local NPR while putting on makeup, and just take my phone with me and listen in the kitchen while I eat breakfast. It pretty much rules.
She Wants Revenge and Psychadelic Furs coming to The Midland in June. It SHOULD be an awesome concert.
Rockabilly Prom was rainy, but it was a lot of fun. I am really glad that I’ve gotten to see Wanda Jackson now.
Finding new delicious places to eat by my office!
I’m grabby for the phrase “not for nothing”. It appears in the introduction for this opinion piece about why print isn’t dying any time soon.
Taking pictures of my feet in new shoes and using the Camera Bag app “mono” filter to make them cool.

My head hurts because I ran outside last night with some co-workers and quickly became aware that it is in fact Spring and I still have allergies. My sinuses hate me.
Friends have lost people they love this week and that’s always hard. I am terrible at knowing what to say.
Wedding planning. I know what I want but can’t seem to decide on a date. Everything is too soon, or too far away, or the temperature at whatever time of year is too hot or too cold. One cool thing is that David’s mom apparently didn’t think it was at all weird that I might wear a black dress.
Nude high heels. Seriously, they just look gross on everyone.
People who work somewhere and don’t even know what the store carries. I don’t care if you are a gay man and don’t care about lingerie, you should at LEAST know what brands your store carries. Also, answer your damn phone, or put your hours on your website. This is all just more support for my theory that small business owners are all insane. I love them, but MAN. Frustrating.
Well, m’friends, I think that is all for now. I think we’re in for a lovely First Friday art walk tomorrow, and I am looking forward to that. Aside from getting out for that, and going to Grandma and Grandpa’s for Easter dinner, I think I’m going to have a pretty quiet weekend, which pleases me. Happy Thursday everyone!

I’m kinda disappointed in myself for not trying harder to get to Austin for SXSW, as it’s my sister’s last Spring Break there before she moves to start her doctorate. It always looks like it would be fun to experience. Anyway…having a good week. Getting LOTS done across the board and it’s really starting to feel like Spring too!

Man Men Barbies. I so want that Joan one to turn into a little secretary Dana doll with the glasses from a different Barbie I have. Yeah…I have some Barbies. WHAT OF IT?
Agency Spy answers back. Why stealing ideas shouldn’t be called creativity in advertising. NB: Read the comments too. There’s a really good one about how Europe does it better.
Thanks to Gala Darling, I’m now obsessed with Girly Girl shoes. Read up!
Pretty Things Peep Show is back at the Granada tonight and I’m super excited!
Happy Gillis is on Twitter! They post their specials everyday!
What a pretty home. WOW.
My friend Joi is the new community manager of Yelp for Kansas City. YAY!
Lunch with my grandma.
Being a makeup model for Vixen Pinup Photography’s “How to be a Pinup” class! It’s gonna be super girly fun and I can’t wait!
Ummm….I feel like I am forgetting something but for now let’s move on to stabby.

Gray weather. totally gross.
Writing invoices…I always have to remind myself it’s how I get PAID.
I think that’s it! So, I hope to have some pictures from Pretty Things Peep Show and the weekend, and I will post those soon!

Being a pinup, thanks to Vixen Pinup Photography. All the years of being in projects for photo student friends (and boyfriend) are paying off. If you haven’t ordered Retro Lovely you should. You get to see me in a Monkey Wrench Clothing corset.
Consumer magazine’s biggest players have banded together for a campaign to promote the print medium.
I NEED this blush. It’s supposed to be better than their Dandelion shade which is too pale, even for my pasty face.
A TON of (free) brush sets for your Photoshopping pleasure.
Retro Barbie and Gene dolls equal girlie retro fun!!
Gorgeous styling in this shoot (NSFW, by the way). I know they are everywhere but I love the tiny top hats. I think it has something to do with my secret wish to be a magician’s assistant. Seems like something a magician’s assistant would wear. I really like the photo in the hotel hallway with the lights.
You MUST watch this Oliver People’s viral video with Elijah Wood and Shirley Manson titled ‘Les enfants sennuient le Dimanche’ (The children are bored on Sundays). I love their promo videos.
Thanks to this Design*Sponge post, I’ve realized that the film “In the Mood for Love” is exactly the look I am going for in our new place. David calls it “vintage frou frou”.

The “Annie Hall” look that the hipster ladies are wearing for Spring, without even knowing the film. Yuck.
People who do not listen when I TELL them to ask me for help before messing with my files.
TAILGATING ON THE HIGHWAY. This is not NASCAR. This is getting from point A to point B, hopefully going the speed limit, with plenty of space between vehicles. If I am in the right lane, you really do not need to be right behind me. There’s no reason for it.
Shopping for home stuff like drapes. There’s some UGLY stuff that people are apparently putting in their homes. Sometimes having taste makes shopping a real drag. And real expensive.
Don’t miss me and other Vixen Pinups in Retro Lovely
I am so excited today! Photographer Nikki Moreno let me know that Vixen Pinup Photography is partnering with Retro Lovely magazine. This means is that some local Kansas City metro models will appear in the magazine, including me!
Retro Lovely is printed in glorious full color, and features lots of well known pinups, including cover girl, Masuimi Max. On top of that, you can pre-order issue one at a discount here. If you’re into lovely ladies with style to spare, you should be reading Retro Lovely.
I’m one of those people who still likes to buy and read magazines, so hopefully you are too. The quality of the photography in the magazine is fantastic, so it’s sure to be lots of fun to flip through. Please support me and the other Kansas City pinups, as well as the fierce and fabulous Nikki, and check out Retro Lovely! I am so excited for Vixen Pinup Photography and honored to be a part of this issue!

- Umm…golly. Go check out the rest of this shoot on Fashion Served. Awesome art movement — way to look back in history for something a little more obscure to use as inspiration! Fun shoot, good model, cool clothes. Kudos for shooting black clothes and making them look good! And kudos for doing a nice shoot in a studio, without a bunch of extra “stuff”. I love seeing nice crisp images, rather than mucking them up with lighting tricks.
The shoot was done for Leninbäk, a group of like-minded creatives from different discaplins who have come together to produce work that matches their unique vision. Their website says:
We love Terry Richardson, Hedi Slimane and Juergen Teller. Also i-D Mag, PIG and Juxtapoz. But we live in Latin America.
We do everything: idea, production, photography, design, painting, directing, video and extras.
We do fashion campaigns, also product campaigns, advertising, editorials, Lookbooks, etc..
Etc, etc, etc.
Awesome. You can check out more of their work here.

HELLO LOVELIES! This week has been so busy (and weird) despite it being a slower week at work as I get ready to start another project on Monday.
Seeing Alkaline Trio on Friday night! David and I will be the oldest ones there who know all the words to every song. And I DON’T CARE, it’s gonna be awesome. They are one of the few bands I still love to see live.
Getting a new couch! It’s vintage, not the CB2 one I have lusted after, but it looks so cute in our place. I will post pictures soon!
Why Lady Gaga is the champion of brand revitalization.
Last.fm. I hate to say this but I kinda like it better than Pandora. I haven’t quite figured out the usefulness of tagging and shouts, but as far as music goes, it’s awesome for finding more that you like.
Be a lady, not a tramp. This book shows us all how.
House Industries and Agent Provocateur. Typography turn-ons in gold.
Be a Blue Angel, or any other color for that matter, in retro-glam lingerie from Dietrich.
Cheating isn’t always bad. Using this Photoshop cheat-sheet is actually very, very good.
Why are girls in Copenhagen so cute?
STABBY:
Gary Lezak telling me that on Wednesday we met but didn’t beat the record low for the date. So that’s supposed to make it OK??? I can’t make myself go to the gym at 5:45 in the morning when it’s below zero. Sorry, I am not that tough. So that means my schedule has been all messed up and that makes me STABBY.
Vogue photoshopping out Tina Fey’s scar for the March cover. I mean, we all know it’s there, and it’s not that noticeable. She’s been on other covers where they didn’t retouch it. That sort of thing just annoys me.
Itchy fabrics.
